Brian Wilson’s response to Phil Spector’s rejection

In 1964, the Beach Boys released their seventh studio album, The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album. The album contains five originals and seven classics, and with their growing popularity, had reach No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart. Over time, the album went gold.

The album was created in response to Phil Spector’s A Christmas Gift for You that was released the year before. Brian made an attempt to be a part of the recording on “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” but Spector let him go due to his performance not being up to his standards.

Brian Wilson arranged and produced the originals, while Dick Reynolds (former arranger of the Four Freshman) took charge of the classic Christmas songs while the Beach Boys would just supply the vocals.

The Beach Boys made an attempt at a second Christmas album in 1977, called Merry Christmas from the Beach Boys, but their label had rejected the idea. Both albums were eventually combined and released in 1998 titled Ultimate Christmas.
